Huawei Works with Wuxi Telecom to Transform its PSTN
Wuxi, a city near Shanghai in eastern China, sits on the banks of Taihu, one of China’s largest freshwater lakes. Wuxi is one of the cities chosen to become an all-optical city by China Telecom. Its Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) has one of the fastest speeds in Jiangsu Province and even in the country. Of the 169 offices in the city, 41 have been consolidated, leaving many equipment rooms and facilities idle. The large and distributed equipment room resources are non-recyclable resources for the carrier an now China Telecom is struggling to find a use for these resources.
Wuxi Telecom (a branch of China Telecom) began to work with Huawei to restructure the phased-out PSTN equipment rooms into Internet data center (IDC) equipment rooms. By using Huawei micro modules and distributed data center solution, Wuxi Telecom took a large step forward in unifying the network management of IDC equipment rooms and unified scheduling of IDC resources in the city. This not only satisfies Wuxi Telecom’s current requirements for hosting services, but also lays a solid foundation for future cloud transformation and CDN market expansion.
The first office to undergo the transformation was the Jiangsu Telecom Wuxi Branch. Wuxi Branch faced the following challenges:
Services are in urgent need of provisioning to new tenets in a fast and efficient manner
Delivery period is limited in 3 months
They are required to have Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.5 or below but could not reach that due to problems in mains supply shortage
Electricity fees are to be saved to spare the limited mains supply and support as many IT loads as possible
A large number of racks are required. A key factor in profitability for Wuxi Telecom is to use a solution to deploy a maximum number of IT cabinets in a limited space
Wuxi Telecom wishes to use this equipment room restructuring to provide a solid foundation for the future unified IDC network management and unified IDC resource scheduling in the whole city.
In response to Wuxi Telecom’s requirements, Huawei proposes the distributed data center solution that implements the following two points:
Uses micro modules to restructure PSTN equipment rooms into IDC equipment rooms
Uses unified network management and DC2 technology to manage and schedule the IDC resources in the city in a unified manner
In this project, the main equipment room area is 547 square meters. Huawei provided seven FusionModule2000 micro modules, totaling 232 IT cabinets. Huawei micro modules have the following features: Factory prefabricated, pre-commissioned, on-site installation, simple operation and maintenance, and rapid copyable deployment. Installing and commissioning this solution only took one month. Cold and hot aisle containment and in-row closely coupled cooling are used, eliminating hot spots and significantly improving PUE.
There are innovations in management as a single console can manage equipment rooms which are under all-digital and real-time monitoring to ensure system reliability. A platform for unified operation, maintenance, and management of data centers in multiple places is constructed, paving a solid foundation for the future unified management and scheduling of the IDC resources in the city.
Restructuring fully reuses existing transformers, diesel generators, and medium/low-voltage power distributors without additionally using main supplies, significantly reducing the customer’s capital expenditures. All seven micro modules are prefabricated and pre-tested in the Huawei factory, rapidly deployed on site, and delivered in 30 days. In terms of space utilization, the current solution offers an average 2.36 square meters per rack, much lower than the traditional 3 square meters per rack. With the same area, Huawei micro modules can deploy 20 percent more cabinets when compared with traditional solutions, bringing extra income from renting. In addition, the customer measures the PUE is as low as 1.36 at an outdoor temperature of 32oC, far exceeding the customer’s expectations, greatly saving electricity, and making better use of the limited mains supply.
By using Huawei micro modules and distributed data center solution, Wuxi Telecom not only revitalizes the idle PSTN resources, bringing excellent benefits, but also transforms their business model from a rack seller to new business mode and income sources are centered on cloud services, becoming a new paradigm for China Telecom Group and an example to all Chinese carriers.
